OVERVIEW
PTHS Instrumental & Guard Ensembles
There are many opportunities for instrumental musicians at PTHS! The main ensemble in the fall is Marching Band, while the other extra curricular ensembles begin in November or December. Concert Band is a year round class that meets throughout the school year.
MARCHING BAND
The PTHS Marching Band is an extra-curricular ensemble of musicians and color guard members that perform at competitions, PTHS football games and other events. Students in grade 8 - 12 are eligible to join.
The season starts with an Open House event in May. Weekly rehearsals begin in July, while both mini band camp and Band Camp takes place in August. After band camp week, rehearsals take place on Tuesday & Thursday evenings and on Saturdays. Most performances take place in September and October on Friday’s and Saturdays. The Marching Band also takes part in the Music Dept Department Spring Trip and the Pequannock Memorial Day Parade.
WOODWIND CHOIR
The PTHS Woodwind Choir is an extra-curricular ensemble that performs works arranged for woodwind instrumentation. Students in grade 8 - 12 are eligible to join. Rehearsals take on place on Tuesday afternoons from mid November to mid April.
JAZZ BAND
The PTHS Jazz Band is an audition-only, extra-curricular ensemble that performs works arranged for Jazz Band instrumentation. Students in grade 9 - 12 are eligible to join. Rehearsals take on place on Wednesday & Friday evenings from mid-November to mid-May. The Jazz Band performs in concerts, jazz festivals and other events as well as the Music Department Spring Trip.
INDOOR GUARD
The PTHS Indoor Guard is an audition-only, extra-curricular ensemble the that performs at competitions and other events. Students in grade 8 - 12 are eligible to joinaudition.
The season starts with an Open House event in mid-November. Rehearsals are generally held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturdays. The ensemble performs in competitions and other events, most of which take place on Saturdays between mid-January and mid-April.
INDOOR PERCUSSION
The PTHS Indoor Percussion is an audition-only, extra-curricular ensemble that performs at competitions and other events. Students in grade 8 - 12 are eligible to audition.
The season starts with an Open House & audition event in mid-November. Rehearsals are generally held on Monday evenings & Wednesdays after school though timing may change each season. The ensemble performs in competitions, usually on Saturdays between mid February and mid-April.
CONCERT BAND
The PTHS Concert Band is a curricular class that performs works arranged for concert band instrumentation. Students in grade 9 - 12 are eligible to take the class. Rehearsals take place throughout the full school year. The Concert Band performs in School Concerts, Concert Band Festivals and participates in the Music Department Spring Trip.
BRASS ENSEMBLE
The PTHS Brass Ensemble is an extra-curricular ensemble that performs works arranged for brass instrumentation. Students in grade 8 - 12 are eligible to join. Rehearsals take on place ad hoc in November. The Brass Ensemble performs in the Pequannock Tree Lighting event, which is usually held Thanksgiving Weekend and at other concerts.
PTHS Vocal and Theater Activities
There are many opportunities for vocal musicians and/or performers at PTHS. The Nocktaves, our a cappella group, rehearses and performs throughout the year. Choir is a class that meets every day, with an opportunity for lunch choir if your child can’t fit Choir into their class schedule. Following a “reveal” in late September, the Winter musical is performed in early March. The Spring play is presented in May and the Summer musical is performed in July.
NOCKTAVES
The PTHS a cappella ensemble (the “Nocktaves”) is an audition-only, extra-curricular ensemble in which a group of students perform without instrumental accompaniment. The group performs in competitions, as well as concerts, school and community events. Auditions take place in early June for the following school year. Students entering grade 9 - 12 are eligible to audition. Rehearsals are usually scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays.
CONCERT CHOIR
The PTHS Concert Choir is a curricular class that performs vocal songs of many different musical genres. Students in grade 9 - 12 are eligible to take the class. Rehearsals take place throughout the full school year. If your student can’t add Concert Choir due to their school schedule, they can be a part of the Concert Choir by signing up for Lunch Choir. The Concert Choir performs in school concerts and participates in the Music Department Spring Trip.
WINTER MUSICAL
The PTHS Spring Musical is an extra-curricular ensemble that rehearses and performs a musical at PTHS. Students in grade 9 - 12 are eligible to join. Auditions are held in early November with rehearsals on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, which run until the performance in early March.
SPRING PLAY
The Spring Play is an extracurricular ensemble open to students in Grade 9-12. The rehearsals (afternoon or evening) begin in March, with a performance in mid-May. The Spring Play has no singing in it so it is a great opportunity for students who want to act but are not comfortable singing or dancing on stage.
SUMMER MUSICAL
The PTHS Summer Musical is an activity sponsored by the PTHS Association of Music Parents that takes place at PTHS. Anyone aged 13-20 is eligible to join. This musical is not restricted to residents of Pequannock.
The season starts with an audition night in mid-May. Weekly rehearsals begin immediately, usually on Tuesday & Thursday evenings and on Saturdays. Final Performances take place toward the end of July. Information about the upcoming summer musical will be posted in the early spring on our website.
